Our People

Our teachers come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are classroom teachers, some are musicians who perform locally or nationally, and we even have award-winning music / songwriters. All our teachers are passionate about music teaching and learning!

Emma Wilson

Director & Founder
Music has the unique power to transcend cultures, languages, and generations—and for Emma Wilson, teaching is where that transformation truly begins. As a specialist in trumpet, trombone, and recorder, and the conductor of the TuM Orchestra, Emma ensures her students don’t just play notes, they understand the theory, speak the language of music, and learn the art of collaboration. Most importantly, her lessons foster joy, connection, and the lasting friendships that grow through making music together. In 2014, Emma and Alison Price co-founded Lakes Community Music School, a project born from passion and a leap of faith. Now known as Turn Up the Music School, it thrives under Emma’s vision, supported by a dedicated board and an inspiring team of teachers, committed to helping every child begin their own musical journey.

Patrons

Jillian Jardine

Jillian Jardine MNZM, has had a long association with the Queenstown Music School, right from the days of its origins in 2014 in the Lakes Community Music School. The Turn up the Music Trust was founded as a direct result of Jillian’s determination to create connections with people who were encouraged to bring their skills and knowledge to the project.

Jillian and husband Dick regularly open their house to host teacher and donor meetings, and the generous gift from Jillian and Dick of the use of a cottage on their land has significantly increased the number of music teachers in Queenstown. As well as being one of our Patrons, Jillian continues to be a generous supporter of our scholarship scheme, and she promotes excellence in music through the yearly award of the Jardine trophy to one of our most talented students.

Mark Wilson

Mark Wilson is a Queenstown legend and well-known personality.

He is unique.  He cannot be pigeonholed. To describe him as a classical pianist, a jazz keyboard player, a church organist, a celtic stylist, a hymn writer – all these would be correct.

But the specific labels ‘miss the mark’ (ha ha).  His magic comes to the fore when all these skills are combined into one tapestry of sound. His music is always exciting, sometimes unpredictable and often filled with humour.

Driven by a passion for uplifting young people, Mark attends most of the our performance events. He often accompanies students, inspiring confidence and building community connections. Whether supporting a budding violinist, bringing energy to an orchestral performance, or giving a new platform to an up-and-coming player, Mark uses his keyboard to uplift every learner he meets.

The Turn Up The Music Charitable Trust is a non profit organisation and relies on the support of the community and businesses to raise funds.

By donating to the Trust you play a pivotal role in helping us support and improve the lives of the Wakatipu Basin Community by providing quality music teaching, music making, performance opportunities and events. We place a particular emphasis on enriching children’s lives and so can you.
